Absorbent materials such as carpet and ceiling tiles may have to be thrown away once they are moldy. Photos and papers you care about should be pulled out and dried first.
Pull out anything valuable, sentimental or official first: photos, tax papers, titles and keepsakes. Paint, solvents, chemicals, pesticides, propane tanks, batteries and fluorescent tubes can't ride on the truck, so set them aside for a household hazardous waste drop-off. Tires, pianos, safes and hot tubs are not hauled either.
Disposal is billed at cost from the landfill or transfer-station receipt, on top of the scheduled hourly rate with its minimum and fuel. Pulling donations and metal out before the trip means less goes to the landfill.

Basement loads from Salt Lake County go to the Salt Lake Valley Landfill, which charges a $17 flat rate for a pickup or hand-unloaded trailer and $36 per ton for larger mixed loads. Basement loads from Summit County go to the Three Mile Canyon Landfill, where loads are charged by weight and uncovered loads pay a double fee. Household hazardous waste is taken there from Summit County residents only.
Basement loads from Wasatch County go to the transfer station at 2015 West 3000 South in Heber City, which charges $56 per ton with a $20 minimum for a tarped or strapped load. Wasatch County has no household hazardous waste program of its own, so paint and chemicals need another drop-off. Since November 1, 2022, the station has told licensed contractors to take their loads elsewhere, so a hauled load may go to Ace Intermountain Recycling in Heber City instead; the fee is billed at cost either way.
