Can a torn window screen be repaired instead of replaced?

Usually yes. If the frame is straight, the mesh and rubber spline can be replaced in the same frame. Small holes can be patched, but a full rescreen looks better and lasts longer. A bent or cracked frame is the main reason to replace the whole screen.

Will a window screen keep a child from falling?

No. CPSC says never to depend on screens to keep children from falling out of windows. Install window stops so windows open no more than 4 inches, or use window guards, and keep furniture away from windows.

What screen mesh should I use?

Standard fiberglass mesh suits most windows and is easy to work with. Aluminum mesh is stiffer and resists tearing. Pet-resistant mesh holds up to claws, and fine insect mesh keeps out tiny bugs.
