How many winters does a young tree need wrapping?

Plan on wrapping for at least two to three winters after planting. As the bark thickens, the trunk needs less protection, though some thin-barked trees such as cherries, peaches and plums can stay susceptible as they age.

Should evergreen shrubs be wrapped completely in burlap?

Usually not; a burlap barrier on the south, southwest and windward sides is enough for most evergreens. If a plant has been injured on all sides, it can be surrounded, but the top should stay open for air and light.
