When should perennials be cut back in the fall?

Cut perennials back once the leaves and stems have turned brown, which is often after a hard frost. Waiting until the foliage dies lets the plant store the most energy in its roots for next year, then stems can be cut to within a few inches of the ground.

What should be done with the cut perennial stems?

Healthy stems can be chopped with a mower and mixed with leaves in the garden or sent to green waste. Any diseased material should be thrown away instead of composted, which USU Extension says helps keep disease from spreading in the garden.

When should crowded perennials be divided?

Divide spring-blooming perennials in the fall and fall-blooming perennials in the spring. For fall division, USU Extension advises dividing and replanting 3 to 4 weeks before the ground freezes so the new pieces have time to settle in.
