Can wet drywall dry out or does it have to be replaced?

Drywall that got briefly damp and dries quickly can sometimes stay, but soaked, sagging, crumbling or moldy drywall should be replaced. EPA says water-damaged areas should be dried within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

How do I know if there is mold behind water-damaged drywall?

Cut an inspection opening, because mold often grows where you cannot see it. EPA notes mold may be hidden on the back side of drywall, wallpaper or paneling and inside walls around leaking pipes.

Can I clean up mold myself after a leak?

Small areas are often a do-it-yourself job; larger ones need professionals. EPA says if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet, roughly a 3 foot by 3 foot patch, most people can handle it themselves following its guidelines.
