Use 1/8-inch metal mesh. The National Interagency Fire Center recommends 1/8-inch metal mesh screening to reduce embers entering vents, and USU Extension gives the same size for attic, eave and foundation vents. Fasten it on every edge so no gaps are left.
They reduce it a little, so the screens must stay clean. Fire-district guidance notes that finer mesh needs more maintenance to stay free of debris and that air must keep flowing freely to manage moisture in the attic or crawlspace. Dryer and bath fan exhausts should never be screened over.
