Is it safe to hang holiday lights yourself?

It can be, but falls are the main risk: CPSC counts about 160 Christmas decorating injuries a day during the holiday season, nearly half of them falls. Set the ladder on level ground, keep 3-point contact while climbing, and look for overhead power lines before moving a ladder.

Do outdoor holiday lights need a GFCI outlet?

Yes. CPSC advises using lights certified for outdoor use and plugging them only into a GFCI-protected receptacle or a portable GFCI. If no outdoor outlet has GFCI protection, a portable plug-in GFCI needs no wiring changes; adding a new outdoor outlet is work for a licensed electrician.

How many strings of holiday lights can be connected end to end?

For incandescent sets, CPSC says never string together more than three sets, and never overload electrical outlets. For LED and other sets, follow the connection limit printed on the package or the tag on the cord of the set you own.
