A gate that screws into the wall. CPSC says to use only gates that screw to the wall at the top of stairs. Pressure-mounted gates belong in doorways and at the bottom of stairs, and pet gates should never stand in for a child safety gate.

What should be childproofed first?

Start with the hazards that can kill: tip-prone furniture and TVs, window cords, open windows and stairs, then cabinets holding medicines and cleaners. CPSC notes that furniture, TVs and ranges can tip over and crush young children.

Are childproofing devices foolproof?
